The Knology PON platform eliminates the traditional need for point-to-point fiber connections between its central offices (or head-ends) and individual customer locations. Knology's platform addresses the shortcomings of point-to-point fiber solutions by using a point-to-multi-point topology. Additionally, because the topology is point-to-multi-point Knology is able to eliminate the use of active electronic components such as regenerators, amplifiers, and lasers from the outside plant, as well as reduce the number of lasers required at the central office (or head-end).
The use of Ethernet (IP) protocol in Knology's platform is essential to delivering simple, efficient, high capacity bandwidth to individual customers. The routing/switching technology offers native IP/Ethernet classification with advanced admission control, bandwidth guarantees, traffic shaping and network resource management that extend beyond traditional Ethernet LAN solutions in business offices.
Quality of Service. Service priorities and service level agreements assure network resources are always available for a customer-specific service.
Security. PON traffic travels over the Fiber network in its own dedicated space referred to as VLAN or VLAN tagging. This follows engineering standards IEE 802.1q. There is added security when this data flows through the Fiber Network it travels as encrypted data.
